Soprano Barbee Monk has been described by critics as “ravishing,” “soaring,” “sparkling,” “vibrant,” “plush,” “superb,” “tender,” and “charming.” A versatile musician and actor, her career has spanned opera, oratorio, recital, new music, and musical theatre. She has shared the stage with artists ranging from Renée Fleming and Gustav Dudamel, to Lin-Manuel Miranda and Brian Stokes Mitchell. 

Ms. Monk has portrayed many of Mozart’s leading ladies, including Vitellia in La clemenza di Tito (dell’Arte Opera Ensemble, Bronx Opera Company); Donna Anna in Don Giovanni (Geneva Light Opera); Fiordiligi in Così fan tutte (New York Opera Conservatory); Konstanze in Die Entführung aus dem Serail (Bronx Opera Company); Pamina in Die Zauberflöte (Opera Theatre of Montclair, New York Lyric Opera Theatre); and Susanna in Le nozze di Figaro (The Opera Atelier). 

Her other favorite opera roles include Blanche de la Force in Dialogues of the Carmelites (Bronx Opera Company); Galatea in Acis and Galatea (Opera Theatre of Montclair); the triple leading role of the Bride/Wife/Mother in The Vanishing Bridegroom (Barnard Opera); Frasquita in Carmen (New Rochelle Opera); Prima conversa in Suor Angelica (Miami Lyric Opera); and Anne Page in Sir John in Love (Bronx Opera Company).

Ms. Monk made her Carnegie Hall debut in 2026 as the soprano soloist in Ralph Vaughan Williams’ Serenade to Music with the New England Symphonic Ensemble under the baton of Steven Zopfi. Her other traditional sacred and concert repertoire includes Handel’s Messiah (Alhambra Orchestra), Fauré’s Requiem (St. John’s in the Village and Church of the Atonement), Mendelssohn’s Elijah (New York Opera Conservatory), Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater (Church of the Atonement), Brahms’ Ein deutsches Requiem, Orff’s Carmina Burana, as well as numerous masses by Mozart and Haydn. In February 2022 she performed a recital in New York called “Music on Time” with pianist Kelly Horsted, featuring an eclectic array of art song, opera, and musical theatre repertoire dealing with the theme of time.

Ms. Monk has performed many world and regional premieres. Most recently she was the soprano soloist in the world premiere of Rob Kapilow’s We Came to America with the New Jersey Symphony under the baton of the composer. She portrayed Solo 1 in the New York premiere of Andrea Clearfield’s Beyond the Binary with Ember Choral Arts, and premiered Sidney Boquiren’s new song cycle The American Cousins based on the poetry of Judith Baumel. She joined the American Contemporary Music Ensemble for the world premiere of Clarice Jensen’s The Exsultation of Inanna, a piece for six solo voices, string quartet, electric guitar, and electronics. Ms. Monk appeared in the east coast premiere of Carla Lucero’s opera Juana about Juana Inez de la Cruz with dell’Arte Opera Ensemble. As a professional soprano at St. John’s in the Village she performed the world premieres of both Nico Muhly’s As Silver is Tried, and Annunciation Mass by her brother, composer Brooks Monk; she also appeared on the first recordings of both works.

A strong singing actress, Ms. Monk’s light opera and musical theatre appearances include Ruby in The Only Girl (VHRP Live!), Soprano in The Hunchback of Notre Dame (Light Opera of New Jersey), Rosalinde in Die Fledermaus (New York Lyric Opera Theatre), Phyllis in Iolanthe (Bronx Opera), and Yum-Yum in The Mikado (Bronx Opera). For the latter she was praised for her “vain and vivacious flair,” “flawless diction,” and “strong and clear” character portrayal. She made her 54 Below debut in 2026 as an ensemble member for “The Songs of Jeremy Schonfeld” which celebrated Mr. Schonfeld’s decades-long career in musical theatre and film.

Ms. Monk is a founding member of the New York Philharmonic Chorus which performs at David Geffen Hall, under the leadership of Malcolm J. Merriweather. Her appearances in both Beethoven’s 9th and Aaron Zigman’s Émigré were televised on PBS. With the NYPhil she has also sung Hailstork’s Done Made My Vow, Mahler’s Resurrection Symphony, and the east coast premiere of Ellen Reid’s Earth Between Oceans, where she was featured as a whistling soloist. She is also a member of the 30-voice Ember ensemble and Ember’s select vocal quintet Ignite. She has performed with the Mostly Mozart Festival and Teatro Nuovo Chorus, both at Lincoln Center.

Ms. Monk holds a Master of Music from the University of Miami’s Frost School of Music, where she first portrayed both Pamina and Susanna and received the Georgina Dieter Dennis Scholarship for Vocal Performance. During her graduate studies she attended the Frost School of Music in Salzburg and won the Schloss Mirabell Competition. She also holds a Bachelor of Music from the University of North Florida; she began her studies as a mezzo-soprano and sang such roles as Hansel in Hansel and Gretel, La Ciesca in Gianni Schicchi, and Suor Dolcina in Suor Angelica. When she transitioned to soprano repertoire she sang her first Messiah; performed the soprano solos in Bach’s St. John Passion; and sang her first Mozart role as Erste Dame in Die Zauberflöte. She was a three-time recipient of the UNF Outstanding Musician Award; a four-time recipient of both the William Brown Memorial Voice Scholarship and the UNF Presidential Scholarship; and studied abroad in both Italy and the Czech Republic on scholarship.
